The preparation contains an increased dose of lutein (12 mg1) and zeaxanthin, blueberry, zinc and vitamins A, C and E. The influence of ingredients contained in blueberries on the vision process was found during World War II. RAF pilots consuming significant amounts of blueberry preparations noticed better visual acuity, especially during night flights. Lutein and zeaxanthin belong to carotenoids, which, like vitamins, are not produced in the human body and must be supplied with diet. They occur mainly in the macula of the eye, the most sensitive spot of the retina. The macula is a cluster of retinal cells responsible for visual acuity. This is the region of the eye particularly susceptible to the effects of adverse factors such as ultraviolet (UV) radiation and free radicals, which is particularly important in people over 40 years of age. Lutein and zeaxanthin also accumulate in the lens of the eye, also acting as a UV filter there. Vitamin A plays an important role in correct vision, in particular - after dusk and in low light. Vitamin A also affects the proper functioning of epithelia, including the eye mucosa. Zinc, vitamins C and E belong to strong antioxidants (antioxidants); they protect eye cells against oxidative stress (free radicals). Zinc also plays an important role in vision processes: it is part of the enzymes that transform vitamin A into a photosensitive dye - rhodopsin.
